Myfanwy is a major supporting character, who appeared alongside the series recurring protagonist Daffyd Thomas. Myfanwy appeared in all three seasons of the original Little Britain TV series and the first half of its charity special, Little Britain Abroad.
Role in the Series[]
Myfanwy was the barmaid atThe Scarecrow and Mrs King' within the mining village Llandewi Breffi, Wales. There, she frequently served "Bacardi and coke" to Daffyd Thomas, the villages self-proclaimed sole homosexual. It is heavily implied that Myfanwy was Daffyd's only friend.
Throughout the series, Myfanwy tried, unsuccessfully, to be a voice of reason to Daffyd. Although Daffyd claimed to be the villages sole gay resident, in reality Llandewi Breffi housed a very large LBGT community. Myfanwy frequently went out of her way to try and help/support Daffyd (especially during the first season). She would encourage him to be more active and help him find activities/clubs that would increase his chances of establishing a gay relationship.
The completely ungrateful Daffyd however, was not interested in such things, as he actively wanted to "remain" the villages sole gay resident. As such, he sabotaged each of Myfanwy's efforts to help him, even going so far as to drive any other gay resident away from the bar. Whenever Myfanwy called him out on his appalling, hypocritical and homophobic behavior, Daffyd would turn the reprimand around and claim that she was the homophobe. As the series went on, Myfanwy became less supportive of Daffyd and was frequently shown to be tired/annoyed by his antics.
Although she did not originally touch upon the subject, in the final episode of Season 1, Myfanwy revealed to Daffyd that she was a lesbian, who was seeing a woman called Rhiannon. Later, in Season 2, Rhiannon and Myfanwy entered a civil partnership. Daffyd (who did not attend the wedding itself) ultimately ruined their reception, when he openly declared that their partnership and plans to adopt were 'disgusting'.
At some point between Little Britain Season 3 and Little Britain Abroad, Myfanwy left Llandewi Breffi and moved to Mykonos. There, she set up her own bar, which was aimed at members of the islands LGBT community. Unfortunately, she made the mistake of inviting of Daffyd over to visit for the pubs opening. As she was busy making the final preparations, Myfanwy asked Daffyd to hand out flyers advertising her bar to the locals. When the big night finally arrived however, Daffyd (who ordered his traditional bacardi and coke) was the pubs only patron. It did not take Myfanwy long to realise that Daffyd had deliberately sabotaged the opening by not handing out any flyers.
Offended by this comment, Daffyd assured her that he did hand out a grand total of two flyers. To make matters worse, he handed them 'out the flyers to the wrong audience', being a 5 year old girl and a nun. Acting as if he had done nothing, Daffyd proclaimed that despite his efforts, the absence of any other customers proved that he was "the only gay upon the Greek Island of Mykonos". No sooner did he say this, than the nun he gave the flyer to walked in and says in Greek "I'm looking for some fanny fun". This left Daffyd stunned and Myfanwy delighted.
Trivia[]
- Myfanwy is the only side character to appear within all three seasons of Little Britain.
- She is also one of the very few genuinely honest/friendly characters within the franchise. She does not cheat on anybody, engage in illegal activities and is shown to be kind to everybody she meets.
- Myfanwy has a catchphrase, "Coming right up", which is a response to Daffyd's catchphrase "Bacardi and coke please, Myfanwy".
- It is not known what happened to her relationship with Rhiannon, as Myfanwy makes no reference to her partner in either Season 3 or Little Britain Abroad. Although not confirmed, it is possible that the couple separated and that Myfanwy moved to Mykonos' to start over. Alternatively, Rhiannon may simply be tying the last loss ends in Wales and intends to join her later.
- Similarly, it is not known what became of Myfanwy's friendship with Daffyd following the incident in Mykonos, as Daffyd never references her in Little Britain USA. Although not confirmed it is possible that his attempt to sabotage her opening night was the final straw for Myfanwy. Tired of his antics and realising that he was never going to change, she may have subsequently kicked him out of both the establishment and her life.
